Onal Injury Law is a personal injury law firm founded by attorney John Onal. The firm represents people who were seriously hurt in car and truck crashes, workplace accidents, falls, dog attacks and medical errors, and families who lost someone in a fatal accident. We have offices in Elmwood Park and Cliffside Park, New Jersey, Staten Island, New York, and Sugar Land, Texas, and we review cases from anywhere in the United States.
Our approach is straightforward. You speak with an attorney about your case, not a call center. We start the investigation early, while video, vehicle data and witness memories are still available. We prepare each case as if it will go to trial, because a case that is ready for a jury is a case the other side has to take seriously. We also tell you plainly what we think, including when the answer is not the one you hoped to hear.
Many of our clients were hurt while traveling, working in another state or visiting family. When a case has to be filed in a state where we do not have an office, we work with locally admitted counsel there, so the case is filed in the right court under the right law. What does a personal injury lawyer do?
A personal injury lawyer represents people who were hurt because of someone else's carelessness. That means investigating what happened, finding every insurance policy that applies, documenting the medical and financial cost of the injury, dealing with the insurance companies, and filing a lawsuit if the case does not resolve fairly.
How much does it cost to hire Onal Injury Law?
The consultation is free. Injury cases are handled on a contingency fee, which means the attorney fee is a percentage of any recovery and there is no attorney fee if there is no recovery. You may still be responsible for case costs and expenses, and we explain all of this in a written agreement before you sign.
Can you help if I was injured in another state?
Yes. We review cases from anywhere in the United States. When a case has to be filed in a state where we do not have an office, we work with locally admitted counsel in that state so the case is filed in the right court under the right law.
How long do I have to file a personal injury claim?
Each state sets its own deadline, and most fall between one and six years for injury lawsuits. Claims against a city, county, state or federal agency often require written notice within a few months. Some insurance policies also require prompt notice. Because the right deadline depends on the state and the facts, it is worth checking early.
Should I talk to the other side's insurance company?
Be polite, but avoid giving a recorded statement or signing a medical release until you understand your rights. Early statements are often used later to dispute fault or the seriousness of an injury. Report the accident to your own insurer, as your policy requires.
What if I was partly at fault?
In most states you can still recover, but the amount is reduced by your share of fault. Many states bar recovery once your share passes 50 or 51 percent, and a few states can bar recovery for any fault. The evidence often shows more than the first reports did, so do not assume a case is lost.
What is my case worth?
No honest lawyer can give you a number in the first call. Value depends on how serious and permanent the injuries are, the medical evidence, the insurance available, the strength of the fault evidence and where the case would be tried. We will tell you which of these are strong in your case and which need work.
Will my case go to trial?
Most injury cases resolve without a trial, but we prepare each case as if it will be tried, because that preparation affects how the other side views it. Whether to settle or go to trial is always your decision.
